Greek regional child support and social funding

In late July 2026, the Peloponnese regional government announced a €4.1 million allocation from the EU Peloponnese 2021–2027 programme to expand preschool education and provide creative-occupation services for children, adolescents, and people with disabilities. The decision also included a €220,000 budget to illuminate the protected Leontidios rock, which drew criticism from the Hellenic Ornithological Society, which described the plan as a “bad idea” that could disrupt the ecosystem of the NATURA 2000 protected area.

Two days later, the Peloponnese grant was detailed as part of the EU Social Fund+ Child Guarantee, specifying vouchers for 7,667 families and support for 8,976 children. In parallel, the municipality of Penteli in Attica secured €421,738 for energy-efficient upgrades to a kindergarten and daycare centre, covering heating, cooling, lighting, insulation, and solar water-heating, with the local authority contributing the remaining €52,600.

By late August 2026, the Peloponnese Region launched two additional social and health initiatives under the ‘Peloponnese 2021–2027’ program. One initiative allocates €900,000 to support Roma children and families through experiential workshops, summer camps, and social care services for toddlers. A second €1 million initiative focuses on public health prevention in Sikyonnia, Xylokastro–Evrostini, and Nemea. This program includes early detection of developmental difficulties in children, mental health support for adolescents via virtual reality, and various health screenings for the elderly and adults to address issues such as hypertension and low birth rates.
