Dimitrov 2026 comeback: Los Cabos withdrawal, Cincinnati

Overview

After a season-ending injury in 2025, Bulgarian player Grigor Dimitrov began his 2026 comeback in July. He entered the Båstad ATP 250 tournament on a wildcard, defeating qualifier Dalibor Svrcina 7-6(5), 1-6, 6-4 to earn 25 ranking points. This victory set up a second-round match against fifth seed Nuno Borges and secured him a wildcard for the Cincinnati Masters.

Dimitrov was subsequently granted a wildcard for the Los Cabos ATP 250 (27 July–1 August). He was scheduled to open the draw against 17-year-old French wildcard Moyse Kuaeme; however, medical examinations revealed bursitis in his leg. The inflammation forced him to withdraw from the event, causing him to miss scheduled training sessions and his opening match.

Following the withdrawal, Dimitrov traveled to the United States to compete in the Cincinnati Masters 1000 (13–23 August). On August 14, in his first-round match against unseeded Argentinian Sebastian Baez, Dimitrov won the first set 6-1. However, Baez staged a comeback to win the match 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Reports indicated that Dimitrov, a former Cincinnati champion and the 2025 US Open defending champion, appeared to struggle with “physical fatigue and energy levels” during the latter stages of the match, losing the final five games. Currently ranked approximately 137, Dimitrov’s performance in Cincinnati remains a critical but challenging step in his effort to regain top-100 status and prepare for the US Open.
