Guardia di Finanza law enforcement operations in Italy
Overview
The Guardia di Finanza has conducted several enforcement operations across Italy targeting illegal manufacturing, drug production, and economic crimes.
In Forgaria, Udine, authorities dismantled a marijuana production center following a vehicle pursuit in Azzano Decimo. The operation, which began after a driver abandoned a car containing 1.2 kilograms of marijuana, led to the seizure of over 23 kilograms of the drug and the arrest of one individual, who was placed under house arrest with an electronic bracelet.
In the Reggio Emilia and Parma regions, law enforcement dismantled a clandestine cigarette factory, seizing 7 tons of counterfeit cigarettes, 13 tons of packaged cigarettes, and 20 tons of loose tobacco. Seized assets, including a semi-trailer truck and a diesel generator, were transferred to the Italian Red Cross for social use.
Recent investigations have also targeted fraud and tax evasion. In Matera, a physician is under investigation for aggravated fraud against the local health authority (ASM) involving allegations of false working hours reported between 2021 and 2024. In Avellino, authorities uncovered a 60-million-euro tax fraud involving a network of 10 ‘paper companies’ used to facilitate ‘carousel fraud,’ allowing a company to evade over 7 million euros in VAT.
Economic inspections in Florence and Pistoia have also identified significant irregularities. In Florence, hundreds of inspections focused on economic irregularities and electronic payment compliance resulted in approximately 300,000 euros in fines. In Pistoia, authorities discovered 29 irregular workers and uncovered undeclared revenues totaling 280,000 euros.
