Gustave Fayet exhibition at Fondation Louis Vuitton

Overview

The Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris is hosting a major exhibition titled ‘Gustave Fayet: Collector—Artist Designer’ (also referred to as ‘Gustave Fayet, Collector–Designer’), running from October 9, 2026, through March 8, 2027.

The exhibition explores the life of Gustave Fayet (1865–1925), a French entrepreneur, artist, and patron who was instrumental in the recognition of early 20th-century avant-garde art. Part of the ‘Icons of Modern Art’ series, the showcase features over 250 works from Fayet’s global collection alongside 374 of his own creations, including paintings and ceramics. The exhibition is supported by the collaboration of 64 international institutions and 71 private collections.

Notable works on display include 10 paintings by Vincent van Gogh, 78 works by Paul Gauguin, and 88 by Odilon Redon. Other featured artists include Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. The exhibition highlights Fayet’s role as a supporter of Gauguin—having maintained financial ties with the artist until his death and lending seventy pieces to the 1906 Salon d’Automne retrospective—and his influence on the art world through his diverse career as a banker, viticulturist, painter, and decorator.

The exhibition, which occupies the entirety of the Frank Gehry-designed building, is accompanied by two books, ‘Gustave Fayet. Collectionneur’ and ‘Gustave Fayet. Créateur’, co-published by Gallimard and the Fondation Louis Vuitton. Additionally, a documentary titled ‘Gustave Fayet, une vie pour l’art’ is available on the Arte platform.
