Overview

The investigation into the mechanical ride accident in Hato Mayor del Rey has taken a tragic turn following the death of 11-year-old Liranyi Reyes Puello. The victim, who had been receiving specialized care at the Dr. Hugo Mendoza Pediatric Hospital in Santo Domingo Norte, passed away due to severe injuries sustained when a support bracket detached from the ‘Estrellitas’ ride during patronal festivities on September 18.

Prior to her death, the child had undergone multiple neurosurgeries to treat severe cranial trauma, skull fractures, and cerebral hemorrhage. Her 13-year-old sister, who was also injured in the fall, was discharged from medical care on September 24 following a favorable recovery. A third minor involved in the incident sustained only minor injuries.

In response to the tragedy, the Mayor’s Office of Hato Mayor del Rey and the Organizing Committee suspended all scheduled festivities for September 26 and 27 as a sign of respect. Authorities continue to hold the owner of the mechanical rides, while three operators remain under investigation by the National Police and the Public Ministry. All rides at the site remain closed by order of the authorities pending the ongoing investigation into the structural integrity and maintenance of the attractions.
