Health awareness and support initiatives in Belgium
Overview
Various health awareness, support, and fundraising initiatives are being conducted across Belgium to assist citizens with chronic conditions and medical needs.
In Zottegem, local partners are working to establish the area as a “dementia-friendly city” through information stands and direct dialogue. Other regional efforts include a Parkinson weekend in Balen focused on treatment and diagnosis, as well as sessions in Retie regarding the use of medical record apps and the distribution of “Gele Doos” (Yellow Box) emergency kits for residents with chronic illnesses.
Cancer awareness efforts continue to mobilize support through major fundraising events. The tenth anniversary of Levensloop Aalst recently concluded at an athletics track, raising a preliminary total of 192,436 euros; the final total will not be officially closed until December 31, 2026. In Arlon, the Relais pour la Vie is scheduled for October 3 and 4 at Place Léopold. This 24-hour walking and running event aims to benefit the Fondation contre le Cancer while specifically honoring “Battants” (fighters) and “Aidants Proches” (close caregivers).
Additionally, organizations are marking the Week of Palliative Care to promote awareness of end-of-life support. In Herdersem, Palliatieve Zorg Regio Dender will celebrate its 30th anniversary on October 10 with an Open (T)Huis event featuring workshops, an exhibition, and a “Mijmerpad” walking route designed for reflecting on memories of loved ones.
