Healthcare access initiatives in Latin America

Overview

Medical institutions and government authorities across Latin America are implementing various initiatives to expand healthcare access and reduce waiting lists.

In Chile, regional hospitals are conducting specialized operations, such as cardiology procedures in Copiapó and Arica, and expanding pediatric oncology capacity in Talca. Recent weekend clinical operations at the Hospital Regional de Copiapó, funded by the Ministry of Health and the Atacama Regional Government, provided oncology and cardiology care to 41 patients. Dr. Carla Paulsen, Acting Director of the hospital, stated the strategy aims to ensure timely access to consultations, controls, and exams. In Panama, the Dr. Rafael Hernández Specialized Hospital organized a weekend cardiology session, providing echocardiograms to 60 patients from Chiriquí, Bocas del Toro, and Veraguas to address months-long waiting periods.

In Mexico, Tamaulipas has allocated significant funding for cataract surgeries, prosthetics, and diagnostic equipment. Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya reported that the state has ranked first in the country for three consecutive years in surgical procedures supported by the Administration of the Public Beneficence Patrimony, with over 216 million pesos allocated toward health and social assistance.

In Venezuela, pediatric surgical programs have been conducted in Mérida, and medical missions have targeted indigenous communities. In Monagas, Governor Ernesto Luna implemented a mission benefiting 230 Kariña indigenous residents in the Ezequiel Zamora municipality, providing general medicine, physiotherapy, deworming, immunizations, and medications for chronic conditions like hypertension and diabetes. In Peru, cardiovascular brigades continue to perform surgeries for congenital heart disease to decentralize care from Lima.
