Heavy rainfall and relief efforts in Japan

Following heavy rainfall in August 2026 that caused significant damage in Chiba and Fukui prefectures, relief and reconstruction initiatives were launched. In Chiba, Chiiki Shinbun Co., Ltd. began a crowdfunding project to raise 1 million yen for the Chiba Heavy Rain Disaster Relief Fund. In Fukui, First Innovation Co., Ltd. and the Tsunagari Ouen association established a website to provide consultation and crowdfunding support for affected businesses and local communities.

By late September 2026, weather concerns intensified across the Kanto region. In Saitama Prefecture, a Level 3 heavy rain warning was issued for Yoshikawa City, alongside Level 3 warnings for Yashio and Misato. Other municipalities, including Saitama, Kawagoe, and Kumagaya, remained under Level 2 heavy rain advisories. In Chiba Prefecture, officials in Funabashi City warned of significant flood risks, particularly in areas south of the Sobu Line and within the Eborigawa river system.

As of the morning of September 21, 2026, meteorological authorities issued Level 4 landslide disaster danger warnings for several municipalities in Chiba, including Togane, Oamishirasato, Narita, Sakura, Kashiwa, and Yachiyo. Additionally, Level 4 heavy rain danger warnings were issued for Chiba City and Mobara. Typhoon 25 has further exacerbated conditions in the Chiba and Kanto regions, bringing heavy rain and high waves.

By September 23, Typhoon 25 caused widespread power outages across Chiba Prefecture, affecting approximately 24,000 households, with major outages reported in Ichihara and Kimitsu. In Ichihara, a residential fire near Ooke on the evening of September 21 injured two people in their 70s; residents believe the blaze was caused by a candle used during the blackout. In Kimitsu, power failures disrupted water pumping stations, resulting in water outages in certain areas.
