Homicides in German shelters and accommodations

Overview

In early August 2026, a homicide investigation was launched in Augsburg after the bodies of a 54-year-old Iraqi man and a 39-year-old Syrian man were discovered in a waste container at the Haunstetten asylum seeker accommodation. A 29-year-old suspect, identified as Mohamad K., was arrested in Munich and placed in a closed psychiatric facility. The 54-year-old victim was identified as Al Kaki; his eldest son described him as a ‘peaceful, hardworking man’ who was uninvolved in any conflict.

On August 13, 2026, a separate fatal incident occurred in Munich at a homeless shelter in the Obersendling district. A 55-year-old Iranian man died at the scene following an attack. Federal police arrested a 22-year-old German national, who was also a resident of the shelter, at Munich Central Station approximately 90 minutes after the emergency call. Following a court order, the suspect has since been placed in a psychiatric facility.
