The fourth edition of the Homo Faber biennial, titled ‘An Island of Light’, commenced on September 1, 2026, at the Giorgio Cini Foundation on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice. A central theme of the biennial is the dialogue between traditional manual skills and contemporary design, specifically addressing the role of the maker as a counterweight to the rise of automation and generative artificial intelligence. This includes ‘An Atelier Alive’, a reconstructed workshop where specialists demonstrate technical processes live.

Mazda has renewed its partnership with the Michelangelo Foundation for this edition, hosting workshops such as dihanko and kintsugi to promote traditional Japanese arts through European craftsmanship and hands-on experimentation. The event emphasizes the cultural value of the artisan workshop, a concept described by Franco Cologni as a ‘choice of freedom’.
