Hungary-Romania law enforcement operations

Law enforcement activities in Hungary and Romania have focused on diverse criminal activities, ranging from urban crime to cross-border security. In Budapest, a month-long operation led to the arrest of 252 individuals for offenses including robbery, theft, and drug-related crimes. Authorities noted that many public space issues are linked to complex social and health factors, prompting coordination with social service organizations for long-term solutions.

In Romania, officials reported 102 forestry crimes in Hargita County during the first seven months of the year, resulting in the seizure of over 1,500 cubic meters of timber. While illegal logging has decreased, perpetrators are reportedly using sophisticated methods to bypass existing tracking systems.

Coordinated efforts between Hungarian and Romanian agencies have also targeted cross-border crime. In Békés County, a Romanian citizen was arrested following a European Arrest Warrant. Additionally, a joint operation in Szatmár County involved the inspection of approximately 1,000 individuals and 400 vehicles to combat human smuggling, stolen vehicles, illegal weapons, and environmental crimes.

Recent enforcement actions include Romania’s ‘Blocada’ operation, where over 3,000 police and gendarmerie officers focused on public order and road safety. During a single Saturday, authorities identified 130 traffic crimes, issued 9,448 fines totaling over 4.2 million lei, and revoked the driving licenses of 549 motorists, including 71 for driving under the influence of alcohol.

In Hungary, the National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) seized 340 boxes of duty-free cigarettes and a firearm from an abandoned vehicle in Budapest. The contraband was located by a service dog named Bingo during a patrol. Investigations into excise tax offenses and budget fraud remain ongoing.
