ICRC Palestinian detainee transfers to Gaza
Overview
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has been facilitating the release and transfer of Palestinian detainees from Israeli-controlled crossings into the Gaza Strip.
On August 10, 2026, the ICRC assisted in the release of 37 detainees, including at least one woman, through the Kerem Abu Salem crossing. These individuals were transferred to the Nasser Medical Complex. The ICRC noted that while it has facilitated the transfer of over 2,700 detainees since 2023, it has been unable to access Palestinian detainees held in Israeli facilities since October 2023.
By August 16, 2026, the ICRC facilitated the release of an additional 35 detainees through the Kerem Shalom crossing. These individuals, reportedly detained following the events of October 7, were transferred to the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis for medical care and health examinations. The group included residents from Gaza City, Rafah, Khan Younis, Jabalia, and the North.
On September 1, 2026, thirteen more Palestinian detainees arrived at the Nasser Medical Complex via the Kerem Shalom crossing under ICRC supervision. During this transfer, one released individual, Ahmed al-Ashra, alleged he experienced ‘mistreatment and inadequate living conditions’ during his detention.
On September 8, 2026, twelve Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, primarily laborers and one merchant, were released through the Kerem Abu Salem border crossing. Received by the ICRC, they were transported to the Nasser Hospital Complex for medical evaluation, with reports indicating signs of extreme fatigue, malnutrition, and physical and psychological trauma.
