Immigration detention of Argentine citizen Iliana Lick

Overview

Iliana Lick, a 30-year-old Argentine citizen working as a nanny in South Philadelphia, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at Philadelphia International Airport on July 11. Authorities determined her visa had expired following her entry into the country on March 17, 2023. Lick was intercepted while attempting to board a domestic flight to Kansas City for the 2026 World Cup.

On August 8, a U.S. judge granted Lick bail in the amount of $10,000, allowing her to await immigration proceedings from freedom rather than remaining at the Otero County Processing Center in New Mexico. Her release was supported by a GoFundMe campaign organized by her partner, Steven Melchiorre, which raised approximately $18,500 to cover legal fees and bail costs. Following her release, Lick was placed under electronic monitoring while her legal case continues.

Lick has since detailed her 31-day detention, describing being treated like a ‘high-risk criminal.’ She reported being subjected to restrictive physical restraints, including handcuffs and chains around her waist and ankles, which caused ‘significant pain.’ During her transfer between facilities in Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Texas, and New Mexico, she experienced overcrowding, including sharing rooms with over 100 people in Louisiana and sleeping in a tent with approximately 50 other women in Texas. Lick maintains she possessed valid documentation, including an approved tourist visa extension and a pending asylum application.
