IMSS public health and administrative initiatives in Mexico
Overview
In late July, the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) in Quintana Roo responded to public criticism of its urgent‑care unit in Cancún, emphasizing its triage process and confirming treatment of a featured patient. Simultaneously, the institute launched a hepatitis B and C screening campaign, offering rapid tests and immediate referral to antiviral therapy, while promoting vaccination for newborns, health workers and high‑risk groups.
A few days later, IMSS in Veracruz shifted focus to preventive pediatric care, urging parents to bring children to family‑medicine units for comprehensive health checks during the summer break. The checks cover growth, nutrition, vaccinations, vision, hearing and oral health, alongside guidance on diet and activity. This outreach occurs amid a seasonal rise in Covid‑19 cases across central Mexico, prompting officials to warn of heightened risk for older adults and young children.
By mid-August, the institute expanded its regional activities to include safety and administrative engagement. In Veracruz Sur, IMSS scheduled fire drills for 92 medical and administrative units to practice orderly evacuation procedures and promote civil protection awareness. Meanwhile, in Coahuila, officials met with users at the General Zone Hospital No. 7 in Monclova to address formal grievances regarding medical care. The institute noted that while some concerns were resolved immediately, others were referred to specific departments for further analysis and follow-up.
