Inauguration of Plaza de la Ranita Cultural Center

Overview

The Secretariat of Urban Development and Mobility (Sedum) announced the inauguration of the Artisanal and Cultural Center at Plaza de La Ranita in Uruapan, Michoacán. Located in the former Cine Odeón, the 1,478-square-meter facility was rehabilitated with an investment of 19.8 million pesos as part of complementary projects for the local cable car system.

Scheduled for opening on August 16, 2026, the event featured traditional cooks, local artisans, and live music. Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla officially inaugurated the center, which aims to rescue urban infrastructure and provide public space for residents and tourists. The facility includes a branch of the Casa de las Artesanías for exhibiting and selling traditional crafts, an exhibition pavilion, a multipurpose room, garden areas, and sanitary facilities.

A central feature of the site is a mural by artist Carlos Campos, described as the largest pictorial work in Michoacán. Measuring 63 meters long and 9 meters high, the mural depicts the region's history, traditions, and local elements such as the National Park and traditional water carriers. The project is intended to strengthen community life, cultural identity, and tourism infrastructure in Uruapan’s historic center.

In late August 2026, the rehabilitation of Plaza de La Ranita was noted alongside various other municipal public works and infrastructure projects being implemented across different regions.
