Overview

In late July 2026 the Indian government continued to broaden farm incomes through agrivoltaics, cooperative farming models, and horticulture incentives. On 31 July 2026 the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved a five‑year extension of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM‑KISAN) cash‑transfer scheme through FY 2030‑31, maintaining a total outlay of Rs 3.15 lakh crore. Eligible farmer families receive Rs 6,000 per year in three instalments of Rs 2,000 each via Direct Benefit Transfer. To date the programme has transferred more than Rs 4.47 lakh crore across 23 instalments, benefitting over 9.49 crore families, with the latest tranche releasing Rs 18,984 crore; women farmers account for about one‑quarter of recipients, receiving over Rs 1.06 lakh crore. Independent evaluations consistently report that roughly 85 % of recipients have reduced reliance on informal credit and about 92 % have used the cash for seeds, fertilizer, machinery and other inputs, reinforcing farm productivity and rural financial stability.
