India DRDO expands indigenous missile program

Since May 2026 the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has pursued a rapid series of indigenous missile programmes across air, sea and land platforms. Early trials validated the UAV‑launched ULPGM‑V3, the RudraM‑II from a Su‑30MKI, and the AD‑1/AD‑2 ballistic‑defence interceptors as well as the NASM‑MR anti‑ship missile. In mid‑June a successful flight of the Long‑Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM) was completed from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, followed in July by the Pinaka Long‑Range Guided Rocket test confirming a 60‑km minimum and 120‑km precision range.

On 23 July the organisation carried out the maiden flight‑test of the indigenous Kusha long‑range surface‑to‑air missile (LRSAM) from the same island. The M1 variant intercepted a high‑speed electronic target, demonstrating Mach 5 performance and confirming the three‑tier architecture: M1 (120‑150 km), M2 (≈250 km) and M3 (350‑400 km). All critical subsystems—including seekers, actuators and computing units—are domestically produced, positioning Kusha as a potential home‑grown outer‑layer air‑defence capability that could eventually replace imported systems such as Russia’s S‑400 and Israel’s Barak.

Simultaneously, DRDO advanced the Pralay tactical ballistic missile, a road‑mobile solid‑fuel system with a 150‑500 km range designed for precision strikes against high‑value targets. Together, the Kusha and Pralay programmes underline India’s drive for strategic autonomy and a broadened, indigenously sourced missile portfolio.
