India FSSAI food safety crackdown
Overview
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) intensified its enforcement drive in late July 2026. After suspending Rehaan Healthcare’s manufacturing licence on July 24 for severe unsanitary conditions, the regulator moved on July 28 to cancel the licence of Delhi’s Park Plaza Hotel and to suspend licences of five major clubs in Greater Mumbai, citing deteriorated cooking oil, pest infestations, fungal growth and cross-contamination.
The crackdown broadened further on July 31 when FSSAI suspended the food licence of Dior Pharmaceuticals in Punjab for critical lapses in Good Manufacturing and Hygiene Practices, and also halted operations at Switz Foods Pvt Ltd after inspectors found extensive pest infestation and inadequate cleaning.
In late August, the enforcement actions expanded to include product adulteration and operational deficiencies. Marche Retail Private Limited in New Delhi received a 30-day licence suspension following inspections that revealed significant flaws in premises design, hygiene, and record-keeping. Additionally, SDP Industries Private Limited in Daman was ordered to halt all ghee sales under brands including ‘Shraddha’, ‘Shri Saras’, and ‘Gokul’. Laboratory tests indicated the presence of beta-sitosterol and improper fatty acid compositions, suggesting the inclusion of vegetable fats in the products.
