Indonesia motorcycle exhaust crackdown

Overview

In early July 2026 Indonesian traffic police began a series of raids targeting motorcycles equipped with noisy, non‑standard exhaust systems. On 4 July, the Satlantas unit in Bengkulu seized 38 bikes, many ridden by under‑age students, and impounded them for a month while issuing traffic tickets. A week later, on the night of 10‑11 July, Bandung’s traffic police conducted a KRYD operation along Jalan Merdeka‑Riau, confiscating 53 motorcycles for the same violation. The operation was reiterated in police statements as part of routine enforcement to curb noise pollution and improve road safety.

The crackdown expanded to other regions in early August. On 1–2 August, Padang police seized 18 motorcycles with illegal “knalpot brong” exhausts during an intensified night patrol aimed at street‑racing hotspots. In nearby Ngawi, the traffic unit cited 16 vehicles – one bus and 15 motorcycles – for the same exhaust violation. Both forces framed the actions as components of an ongoing, nationwide effort to reduce noise, enhance traffic safety, and prevent related public‑order incidents.
