Indonesia bolsters fuel reserves and shipping to resolve de-

Overview

Fuel distribution disruptions in Bali and East Java have been addressed following delays in tanker shipments from Java. To prevent future shortages, Minister Bahlil Lahadalia has directed Pertamina to increase Bali’s fuel reserves from the current 11–12 days to a 15-day standard. Seven extra ships have also been deployed to bolster the supply chain to the island.

In Bali, Governor Wayan Koster has extended an odd-even vehicle policy at fuel stations until October 23, 2026, to manage demand and maintain stable distribution. Meanwhile, officials in East Java confirmed that fuel stocks remain secure through the end of October, despite previous queues in areas such as Jember and Malang. To resolve queues in Malang, Jember, and Blitar, authorities are working to stabilize distribution within one to two days by increasing supply via additional tankers and extending depot operating hours to 24 hours.

Nationally, Pertamina reports a continued shift in consumer behavior, noting a 7–8% monthly increase in Pertalite usage in Central Java and Yogyakarta as citizens seek to save costs. This surge has kept national Pertalite reserves between 16 and 18 days. The government has set a goal to restore national Pertalite reserves to a 20-day standard within one week.

In the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), Hiswana Migas and PT Pertamina Patra Niaga have confirmed that fuel supplies remain sufficient through the end of 2026. Despite increased queues for subsidized Pertalite, officials noted that energy reserves in DIY exceed normal daily requirements. Contingency plans are currently in place to manage potential consumption spikes during the upcoming Christmas and New Year period.
