Indonesian prison security raids
Overview
Indonesian authorities have initiated a series of joint security raids across various detention centers to prevent the entry of prohibited items and narcotics.
On September 17, a collaborative operation involving the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the Indonesian National Police (Polri), and the National Narcotics Board (BNN) targeted the Purwokerto Class IIA Prison. The raid included inspections of residential blocks and random urine testing for inmates and staff, though no significant prohibited items were discovered.
By September 19, similar joint operations were conducted in Surabaya and Surakarta. In Surabaya, authorities seized 53 prohibited items, including 22 lighters, 10 metal razors, six makeshift electrical outlets, glass objects, cutters, knives, cables, and earphones. In Surakarta, a raid resulted in the confiscation of items such as iron bars, nails, glass, and clothes hangers, though no narcotics or mobile phones were found.
On September 22, operations continued in Tarakan and Karawang, aligning with the ‘15 Acceleration Programs’ to eradicate narcotics and fraud. In Tarakan, no narcotics or mobile phones were found, and inmate urine tests were negative. In Karawang, officers seized security risks including hammers, nails, improvised water heaters, and various cables.
On September 28, security measures intensified in Bengkalis and Tanjungpinang. At Lapas IIA Bengkalis, six coordinated teams conducted cell inspections targeting mobile phones, electronic devices, and unauthorized electrical installations. In Tanjungpinang, the Lapas Narkotika Kelas IIA implemented socialization sessions with inmate cell leaders to reinforce prohibitions against weapons, explosives, and communication devices. These efforts aim to achieve ‘Zero Halinar’—a policy targeting the elimination of mobile phones, illegal levies, and narcotics.
