Indore stadium dispute over Rahul Gandhi event
Overview
A political dispute has emerged in Indore regarding the use of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium for a proposed program titled ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’. The Congress party intends to host the event to address student-related issues, such as the right to education, unemployment, and paper leaks, potentially featuring Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi.
Madhya Pradesh Congress President Jitu Patwari has formally requested permission from Chief Minister Mohan Yadav to host the event on September 12, emphasizing that the program is a dialogue on youth aspirations rather than a standard political rally. However, Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav has cited High Court orders that restrict the stadium to sports activities or state-level government programs.
Following the denial of permission for the stadium, the event—now scheduled for September 19—faces administrative hurdles. A Congress delegation led by Indore City President Chintu Chokse met with Collector Shivam Verma to propose alternative locations, including the Indore Development Authority (IDA) ground, the Devi Ahilya University campus ground, and a field near the Government Arts and Commerce College.
Congress leaders have accused the administration of acting under pressure from the ruling party. Despite the lack of official venue approval, the party claims preparations are proceeding, with student registrations reportedly exceeding 75,000. The party has submitted formal requests to both the IDA and the Municipal Corporation, pledging to adhere to all safety and administrative regulations.
