Infrastructure and mobility developments in Goiânia

Overview

Infrastructure development in the Goiânia metropolitan region continues to focus on large-scale logistics and local urban mobility. A major project is underway to construct the Contorno Leste, a 44-kilometer ring road designed to divert heavy traffic from the BR-153 highway. This R$ 1 billion investment aims to facilitate transit toward northern and southwestern Goiás, Minas Gerais, and São Paulo, with expectations to handle 22,000 vehicles daily by 2035.

Local mobility efforts have expanded with several new initiatives. The BRT Leste-Oeste transit system has implemented traffic light priority to favor collective transport, aiming to reduce travel times for passengers. In the Northwest region, construction has commenced to replace the roundabout near the Hugol hospital with signalized intersections and a binary system to alleviate bottlenecks on the GO-070, where approximately 24,000 vehicles pass daily.

Furthermore, the city administration has announced a R$ 119 million investment to renew street signaling across the capital. This project seeks to modernize signs and standardize traffic information in both central and outlying neighborhoods to enhance safety for drivers and pedestrians and improve overall traffic fluidity.

Recent progress in public transit includes the completion of the metronization process for the 17-kilometer BRT Norte-Sul corridor, stretching between the Recanto do Bosque and Isidória terminals. Mayor Sandro Mabel announced that the city now operates 31 kilometers of metronized BRT across its two main axes. The technology utilizes intelligent traffic light priority to create a ‘green wave’ for buses. Following the implementation on the East-West axis, average speeds increased by over 31%, rising from 16 km/h to more than 21 km/h, while intersection interruptions per trip dropped from over 30 to approximately seven.
