Infrastructure and water utility disruptions in Mexico
Overview
Infrastructure failures in several Mexican coastal locations have caused water supply disruptions and road safety issues.
In Puerto Morelos, a collapsed pipe involving four- and six-inch lines led to a significant potable water leak. This rupture caused pavement cracking and asphalt sinking at the intersection of Joaquín Zetina Gasca Avenue and Delfín Street, affecting the Villas Morelos and Villas La Playa areas. Officials suggested that recent rainfall may have caused soil saturation, contributing to the pipe failure. The area has been cordoned off to protect the public while the company Aguakan works to repair the rupture.
In Mazatlán, asphalt subsidence on Emilio Barragán Avenue necessitated the temporary closure of a southbound lane near the ASIPONA wall, specifically between 21 de Marzo Street and the Isla de la Piedra pier. Authorities implemented two-way traffic on the remaining lane to maintain mobility.
In Puerto Vallarta, Seapal Vallarta suspended water services in multiple neighborhoods, including La Playita, Centro Pitillal, Prados de la Montaña, Villa de Guadalupe, Paseos de la Ribera, Leandro Valle, La Posta, San Esteban, and Miramar condominiums, to perform urgent interconnection work. Additionally, a sinkhole has opened on Colombia Street in the city center in front of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) facilities. Civil Protection has cordoned off the area, as the damage is believed to stem from heavy traffic, recent rains, or potential underground leaks in drainage or water networks.
