Infrastructure and transport development in Umbria
Overview
Infrastructure development in the Umbria region continues through healthcare and transportation projects. In the healthcare sector, Usl Umbria 1 has resumed construction on the Casa della Comunità in Monteluce, Perugia, and the Ospedale di Comunità in Umbertide. The Monteluce project, funded by the PNRR, involves an investment of approximately 5.2 million euros.
Transportation updates include a 4 million euro redevelopment of the Piazza Partigiani interchange terminal in Perugia. While discussions regarding the Collestrada railway station near the Umbria Airport continue, the regional government has also outlined a timeline for the reactivation of the Ferrovia Centrale Umbra (FCU) railway line. Regional Infrastructure Councilor Francesco De Rebotti identified the Terni-Perugia line as a top priority. Track renewal for the central section between Ponte San Giovanni and Città di Castello is largely complete, with new signaling systems expected by the second half of 2027. For the northern section, track work is expected to finish in early 2027, with civil works on bridges and stations projected to conclude by October 2028.
To coincide with the eighth centenary of Saint Francis, an enhanced intermodal public transport plan is active through December 31, 2026. In collaboration with Trenitalia and Busitalia, the plan integrates trains, buses, and funiculars to improve accessibility to Assisi, Orvieto, Gubbio, and the Valnerina. Regional President Stefania Proietti noted that the measures aim to support sustainable mobility as local accommodations face overbooking due to the celebrations.
