Intellectual property crime prosecutions in Vietnam
Overview
Authorities in Vietnam have initiated criminal proceedings against several individuals for various intellectual property violations.
In Can Tho, police prosecuted Huỳnh Thanh Hiển, owner of the Thanh Hiển Luxury fashion store, for infringing on industrial property rights. An investigation led to the seizure of 2,949 counterfeit items—including clothing, footwear, and accessories from brands such as Burberry, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Dior, and Hermes—with an estimated value exceeding 1.9 billion VND.
In a separate case in Can Tho, Pham Van Tan was prosecuted for similar offenses after officials seized 1,520 pairs of counterfeit footwear featuring brands like Chanel, Adidas, and Nike, valued at over 200 million VND. Additionally, in Quang Ninh, Nguyen Manh Can was charged with violating copyright and related rights for developing and distributing a game that copied the gameplay and interface of ‘Ninja School Online.’ Can reportedly generated approximately 2.48 billion VND in illegal profits through the unauthorized sale of in-game items and virtual currency.
In Thai Nguyen, provincial police initiated proceedings against Pham Van Dung and Duong Cong Anh for infringing upon industrial property rights. Following inspections in Kha Son and Diem Thuy communes, economic police seized nearly 1,800 counterfeit products bearing brand names such as Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, Adidas, Nike, Gucci, and Hermès. The total value of the seized goods exceeded 756 million VND, with 1,124 products confiscated from Dung’s location and 657 from Anh’s establishment.
