12th International Summer University on Greek Language

The 12th International Summer University, themed ‘Greek Language, Culture and Media’, is being held at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, Australia, from September 6 to September 11, 2026.

Under the theme ‘The Greek Language in Australia: From Memory to the Future’, the event aims to explore the historical journey and future prospects of the Greek language in the region, addressing challenges related to digital technology, media, and modern education. The program is organized by the University of Ioannina in collaboration with the UNSW Greek Studies Program and Unity in Philia, with support from the Hellenic Republic’s Presidency and the General Secretariat for Emigrants and Public Diplomacy.

Greek President Konstantinos Tasoulas sent a greeting, describing the language as a “foundation of identity and a bridge connecting the diaspora to their roots.” Archbishop Makarios of Australia also attended to deliver a speech regarding the status of the Greek language in Australia. During the proceedings, the Archbishop received a delegation of Greek professors and educators, led by Nicoletta Tsitsanoudi-Mallidi of the University of Ioannina and Dr. Vasileios Adraktas of UNSW, at the Holy Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Theotokos in Redfern.

Key initiatives include a session on September 11 titled ‘The role of entrepreneurship in the dissemination of the Greek language – Bridges of innovation between Australia and the European Union’. The university aims to strengthen ties between the Greek diaspora and Greece by connecting academic and professional networks.
