Investigation into community cat killings in Valdepeñas

Overview

Following a social media video in which a resident of Valdepeñas claimed to have killed approximately 40 community cats and run over ten others, the Animalist Party (PACMA) filed a formal complaint with the Guardia Civil. The individual justified his actions by labeling cats as predators and criticizing the Valdepeñas City Council for allowing animals to be fed in public areas.

Subsequently, the Civil Guard’s Nature Protection Service (Seprona) opened an investigation into the matter. While statements have been taken, no formal charges have been filed against the man. PACMA has continued to demand that the municipality fulfill its legal obligations under Law 7/2023 to manage and protect cat colonies through ethical methods such as the Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) protocol.

PACMA has since expanded its formal complaint against the individual, who has been referred to as the ‘matagatos de Valdepeñas’ (Valdepeñas cat killer). The expanded complaint includes video evidence and social media posts from Facebook and Instagram where the man allegedly refers to the capture and killing of various animals, including cats, dormice, snakes, magpies, and lizards.

The accused, who manages a canine residence and provides training services, is under investigation for potential crimes of animal cruelty and against fauna. PACMA has requested urgent precautionary measures, including the suspension of the man’s professional activities, the seizure of potential weapons or poisons, and the removal and custody of animals currently under his responsibility.
