Iraq electricity gas supply expansion
Overview
In late July 2026 Iran’s state oil ministry confirmed that gas exported through two dedicated pipelines now fuels the majority of Iraq’s electricity generation. The supply was highlighted during a high‑level visit by Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al‑Zaid to Tehran, where Iran and Iraq signed four additional agreements to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors.
In early August 2026 private operators Dana Gas and Crescent Petroleum began delivering 100 MMscf/d of natural gas from the Khor Mor field in the Kurdistan Region to Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity. The gas is piped to the Kirkuk Taza power station under a one‑year term, following a December agreement and an expansion of the KM250 processing facility that raised Khor Mor’s capacity by 50% in October 2025.
On 7 August 2026 the Kurdistan Regional Government publicly disputed the operators’ claim that deliveries had started on 4 August, stating it had not approved the shipments and that the launch breached its contractual authority. The KRG said it was only informed of the announcement after the fact, while the companies continued to present the deliveries as a milestone for regional energy security.
