Italian basketball court inaugurations

Overview

In early August 2026, several Italian municipalities opened new outdoor basketball facilities. On 1 August, Sicily’s Licodia Eubea inaugurated a multipurpose basketball and volleyball court funded by the EU’s PO FESR Sicilia 2021–2027 programme, part of the “A more inclusive Sicily” priority. The ceremony included demonstration games by ASD Bidibasket Vizzini.

In Melito di Porto Salvo, Sicily, a new basketball playground was opened on 3 August. The event, which featured ribbon-cutting, youth games, and cultural performances, was attended by national champion Simone Surfaro, who praised the municipal support. Former coach Costantino Longo noted the facility represents a “relaunch for basketball in the entire area.”

In Pescara, a state-of-the-art outdoor court named after Vittorio Pomilio was opened in Florida Park. This project was led by NBA player Simone Fontecchio to honor his grandfather, describing the playground as a “gift to the city’s youth” to foster community.

Meanwhile, in Varese, Lombardy, the refurbishment of the outdoor court at the Campus is underway. Promoted by the Basket Siamo Noi association, the project marks the 80-year celebration of Pallacanestro Varese. Fundraising has secured €37,050 toward a €46,000 goal, with the remaining funds needed for boards, hoops, nets, and bleachers. The court is scheduled for inauguration on 13 September 2026.
