Italian diesel tax fraud crackdown

Entities: Italian fuel market · Daniele Corradini · Unem · Adnkronos · Rome

Overview

In early July 2026, Italy’s Guardia di Finanza seized a fuel‑transport truck in Vazzano, Vibo Valentia, after finding the diesel load exceeded the declared amount by about 2,000 liters. The driver and the company’s sole shareholder were referred to the public prosecutor for violations of the excise‑tax regime, continuing the agency’s “Dedalo Petrolmafie” operation.

A week later, the Milan provincial command confiscated 30,000 liters of adulterated diesel intended for illegal sale. A court ordered the fuel to be handed over to the Vigili del Fuoco (Fire Department). On 18 July, the Milan fire service received the shipment, which will be analysed and re‑conditioned at Eni’s Sannazzaro refinery before being used at no cost for institutional and emergency operations, generating savings for public finances.

On 23 July, Guardia di Finanza agents in Catania province raided a warehouse in Palagonia, Sicily, seizing about 1,000 liters of subsidised agricultural diesel that had been sold to private motorists, along with an autobotte, storage tanks and dispensing equipment. Three individuals were identified and referred to the prosecutor for excise‑duty subtraction.

In early August, following a journalistic investigation, authorities conducted inspections at refueling stations in Rome and its surrounding province. The operation revealed widespread fuel adulteration, with laboratory analysis confirming that gasoline and diesel were being diluted with water or other substances to increase volume. Over 10 tons of irregular fuel were seized, and more than 20,000 euros in fines were issued. In the Lazio region, seizures of non-compliant fuel have reportedly increased by 350% compared to the previous year.
