Italy's anti‑fascist pasta commemoration events
Entities: Maria Cavatassi Santiloni · ANPI · Centro Sociale San Girolamo · Paul Canarelli · Valle del Tassaro
Overview
The anti‑fascist pasta tradition, rooted in the 1943 Cervi brothers’ gesture, continued to expand across Italy and abroad in July 2026.
On 18 July, ANPI sections from Solbiate Olona, Gorla Maggiore, Gorla Minore and Olgiate Olona hosted a “Pastasciuttata Antifascista” in Valle Olona, drawing more than 130 participants. The event combined a communal meal with a book display, a student‑produced exhibition on women of the Resistance, and a live band playing songs such as “Bella Ciao”.
From 20 July onward, dozens of towns organized free pasta meals with cultural programming, reinforcing democratic values and the memory of the Cervi brothers.
On 25 July, Senigallia’s free anti‑fascist pasta dinner marked the 83rd anniversary of Mussolini’s fall, serving about 300 guests.
The following day, activist group La Strada staged a dual celebration in Reggio Calabria and the eighth‑annual “La Pasta Antifascista” in Salcedo, Dominican Republic.
On 28 July, more than four hundred people gathered at the Centro Sociale San Girolamo in Fermo for the “Pastasciutta Antifascista”. The event featured a communal meal, a showcase of 21 women who served in Italy’s Constituent Assembly, and testimony from former partisan Maria Cavatassi Santiloni linking the wartime resistance to later fights for workers’ rights and democratic foundations. Organisers stressed the need to keep the antifascist legacy alive in the face of contemporary political rhetoric.
In Saluzzo, a similar “Pastasciutta antifascista” dinner on 28 July drew over 200 locals, reinforcing democratic memory through shared pasta and music. The gathering, noted alongside broader cultural initiatives promoting rural heritage, underscored the continued resonance of the anti‑fascist pasta tradition across Italy’s smaller communities.
These events link contemporary civic engagement with historic resistance, extending the anti‑fascist culinary commemoration throughout Italy and to the Dominican Republic.
