Italian public transport service disruptions
Overview
Public transport services in Italy have faced significant operational challenges, particularly in Genoa and Cosenza.
In Genoa, the Ugl union has expressed concerns regarding proposed service reductions for Amt, suggesting that suppressing specific lines like 6 and 8 would be preferable to a uniform 10 percent network-wide cut. Union secretary Roberto Piccardo warned that reducing service in densely populated areas could compromise staff safety due to potential passenger confrontations.
In Cosenza, the municipal company Amaco faced an uncertain future following a bankruptcy procedure. Following the cessation of Amaco’s activities, an agreement was reached to ensure the continuity of local transport through the Cometra consortium. To facilitate this transition and safeguard jobs, the municipality transferred the management of city center parking areas to Cometra.
As of October 1, the management of local public transport in Cosenza has officially transitioned to the Cometra consortium. Mayor Franz Caruso stated that the change resulted from a collaborative effort between the municipal administration, the new consortium, and the Calabria Region to ensure essential services and protect employment levels. While officials noted that a temporary reduction in bus runs may cause initial service disruptions, they expect a gradual restoration of regularity. The service is expected to be enhanced in the coming weeks as the bus fleet increases to reach full operational capacity, including the use of smaller vehicles to better serve narrow streets and remote peripheral areas.
