Italy railway infrastructure upgrades

Entities: Italian Ministry of Transport · Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) · Matteo Salvini · Florence · Ponte al Pino bridge

Overview

In early July 2026 a reconnaissance train inspected the Benevento‑Cancello line in Campania, checking Hitachi Rail signalling and safety upgrades financed by the national recovery plan. The regional council allocated €3 million to complete the new Guidoni station on the Florence‑Pisa line to improve intermodal connections.

Later in July, Florence suspended traffic on the Campo di Marte – Rifredi and Campo di Marte – Santa Maria Novella lines from 23:00 GMT on 26 July until 11:00 GMT on 30 July. RFI installed a 550‑tonne Ponte al Pino bridge deck using a 2 000‑tonne crane, one of the most complex lifts in Europe. The bridge deck was lifted and positioned in a single operation; the crane is capable of handling up to 1 600 tonnes. During the suspension the node’s schedule was cut by about 50 %, with four trains per hour kept on the Santa Maria Novella line and three per hour on the Campo di Marte line. Long‑distance trains were rerouted via the Tirrenica line, adding roughly two‑and‑a‑half hours to journeys. A free shuttle bus linked the closed stations, while limited hourly connections to Milan, Venice, Rome and Naples remained. Minister of Transport Matteo Salvini attended the bridge‑installation ceremony. Civil‑protection teams supplied information, water and assistance for passengers with reduced mobility. The work is part of a broader programme to modernise and improve the safety, reliability and durability of Florence’s rail infrastructure.

The government also announced a €20 billion programme of 25 rail projects in Sicily, including a €47 million link to Birgi airport in Trapani and a €237 million reconstruction of the Palermo‑Trapani line via Milo. Florence approved €55 million for the second phase of Artemio Franchi stadium refurbishment ahead of its UEFA Euro 2032 bid.
