Italy solar capacity and renewable energy expansion

Overview

In late July 2026, Italy’s renewable energy sector launched several complementary initiatives involving utility acquisitions, community projects, and digital participation.

Dolomiti Energia completed the purchase of a 20 MWp photovoltaic plant in Montecchio Emilia, raising its authorized solar capacity to more than 29 MW as it moves toward a 60 MW target for 2030. The utility also backed a community solar effort in Valbrona, Lombardy, where a partnership with Swedish firm Svea Solar supports local energy costs through rooftop PV installations.

Two days later, Enel and blockchain company Conio introduced the “ebitts” utility token, allowing households to purchase digital shares of output from an Enel PV park in Viterbo and a wind farm in Potenza to receive bill savings. Concurrently, the Società Elettrica di Favignana began building a 994 kW agrivoltaic system on an olive grove in Cala Grande to support the island’s zero-emissions programme.

By mid-August, developments focused on large-scale storage and expanded agrivoltaic integration. In Basilicata, authorities authorized two Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in Melfi and Picerno to support a 2.1 GW renewable capacity target by 2030. However, the rapid increase in permit requests has raised concerns regarding strategic planning, land use, and grid capacity. The Picerno plant, involving approximately 150 containers, has faced scrutiny regarding thermal safety risks and territorial integration.

Enel also expanded its agrivoltaic footprint. In Pian di Giorgio, Viterbese, a 54.9 MW solar park utilizes bifacial modules and tracking to support olive and alfalfa cultivation. Additionally, Enel announced the full operational capacity of a 9 MWp expanded photovoltaic park in Montalto di Castro, Lazio. This facility uses bifacial panels and integrates lavender cultivation to support local pollinators, though the ‘No Fotovoltaico Selvaggio’ committee has called for greater transparency regarding the region’s energy balance.
