JaCorey Thomas NCAA eligibility legal dispute

Overview

JaCorey Thomas, a former Georgia Bulldogs defensive back, committed to West Virginia University (WVU) for his fifth year of eligibility following legal challenges regarding NCAA rules. Thomas, who participated in a rookie minicamp for the Carolina Panthers after going undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft, maintained his eligibility because he did not sign a professional contract.

After securing a temporary restraining order in Texas, Thomas was eventually granted eligibility to play for WVU following a preliminary injunction issued by a Monroe Circuit Court judge in Indiana. This injunction was part of a legal effort by approximately 100 athletes seeking relief after new NCAA rules excluded members of the class of 2022.

Thomas has officially joined the West Virginia Mountaineers roster, wearing number 30 and listed as a nickel/sam defender. Although he missed the first three games of the season due to the legal proceedings, he is expected to integrate into the defensive rotation. While early projections suggested he might see between 15 and 25 snaps per game to provide relief for Geimere Latimer, recent updates indicate he has begun learning the system under defensive coordinator Zac Alley.

While Thomas did not play in the recent game against Oklahoma State, head coach Rich Rodriguez noted that he is expected to contribute to the safety rotation soon. Defensive coordinator Zac Alley indicated that Thomas’s speed and hitting ability could provide support to a secondary that has struggled with containment and coverage.
