Jeep Cherokee brand resurgence and hybrid relaunch

Overview

The Jeep Cherokee nameplate is transitioning from a period of cultural resurgence to a formal brand relaunch. Following a three-year hiatus focused on the Compass and Grand Cherokee models, Jeep has officially reintroduced the Cherokee with a 2026 model.

This new iteration marks a significant technological shift, replacing previous V6 engines with a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid system. This powertrain produces a combined 210 horsepower and 230 lb-ft of torque, aiming to balance off-road heritage with modern fuel efficiency, featuring an advertised consumption of approximately 6.3 L/100 km. The electric motor is specifically designed to provide more immediate response by compensating for the turbocharger’s initial torque gaps.

Expanding on this relaunch, Jeep unveiled the 2027 Cherokee Trailhawk, a hybrid off-road model built on Stellantis’s global EMP2 platform. This model represents a technical milestone for the group, successfully integrating a traditional 4x4 drivetrain—including a driveshaft for rear power transfer—into a platform previously limited to front-wheel-drive configurations. The Trailhawk utilizes the Jeep Active Drive II system, featuring a two-speed transfer case, a locking rear differential, and steel skid plates to protect the battery and fuel tank.

Technical enhancements for the Trailhawk include a revised suspension providing a 25 mm lift for a total ground clearance of 229 mm, alongside 17-inch wheels with Nexen Rodian ATX all-terrain tires. Exterior modifications such as a redesigned front bumper, red tow points, and an anti-reflective hood treatment further improve approach angles and rugged utility. The vehicle is capable of wading through water up to 610 mm deep. In the United States, orders for the model have opened with a starting price of $44,625.
