Jewish educational and cultural expansion in Frankfurt

Overview

The Central Council of Jews in Germany is expanding its cultural and educational presence in Frankfurt am Main. This includes the opening of the Maccabi Campus, which features a traveling exhibition honoring Jewish athletes and an escape room focused on Jewish history and memory culture.

The Jewish Academy has officially opened in Frankfurt, marking the first supra-regional, non-university Jewish educational institution in Germany since the Holocaust. Located in the Fischerfeldviertel near the Frankfurt Messe, the facility consists of a new building and an old city villa. The project was spearheaded by the Central Council of Jews in Germany and funded by the German federal government, the state of Hessen, the city of Frankfurt, and the Central Council, with total costs reaching approximately 40 million euros.

The opening ceremony included high-ranking officials such as German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Frankfurt Mayor Mike Josef. President Steinmeier described the academy as “a milestone and a sign of Jewish self-confidence.” The institution aims to serve as a center for education, research, and discourse to combat rising antisemitism, which has seen a massive increase in incidents since October 7, 2023. Josef Schuster, President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, noted that the academy aims to make the Jewish voice more audible regarding broader societal issues. Although construction was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, labor shortages, and heightened security requirements, the academy plans to roll out its full educational programming gradually, with a projected start in the spring of 2027.
