K-pop achievements at 2026 MTV VMAs

Overview

K-pop artists achieved historic milestones at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) in Los Angeles. BTS secured three awards, including ‘Song of the Year’ for their track ‘Swim’ from the album ‘Arirang’. This achievement marks the first time an Asian group has won the ‘Song of the Year’ category in the 42-year history of the ceremony. The group also won ‘Best K-Pop’ and ‘Best Group’, the latter being their fifth consecutive win in that category. Having swept all their nominations, BTS has now collected a total of 13 trophies at the ceremony since their debut in 2019. Their album ‘Arirang’ previously debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.

Blackpink’s Lisa also made history as the first Asian solo artist to win a major VMA award, taking home ‘Best Pop’ for her song ‘Dream’, a collaboration with Japanese actor Kentaro Sakaguchi from her debut studio album ‘Alter Ego’. During the ceremony, Lisa performed her new song ‘SaWaDiKa’ for the first time on television, a track incorporating Thai cultural elements such as signage and a life-sized tuk-tuk. This win marks the fourth VMA of her career. Following the awards, Big Hit Music stated that ‘Arirang’ represents a new beginning for the group after their hiatus and return from mandatory military service. Member J-Hope expressed gratitude to the group’s fanbase, known as ARMY, via Weverse, noting that 2026 has been a significant year for the group’s reunion. Although BTS was unable to attend the ceremony due to their ongoing ‘Arirang’ world tour, they expressed gratitude to their fans. Lisa’s ‘Best Pop’ victory has sparked social media debate regarding streaming numbers, though the category is decided by fan voting.
