Karnataka Minister B. Nagendra corruption allegations
Overview
Minister B. Nagendra is facing scrutiny regarding the alleged misappropriation of funds from the Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has investigated allegations that Nagendra violated bail conditions by traveling to New Delhi without prior judicial approval.
While the Karnataka High Court recently relaxed his travel restrictions to allow movement within India, Justice M Nagaprasanna ruled that Nagendra’s ministerial role, including the Planning and Statistics portfolio, necessitates travel beyond the state to discharge official duties. The court quashed previous restrictions on intra-India travel but maintained that Nagendra must still obtain permission from the trial court before traveling outside of India.
Opposition parties, including the BJP and JD(S), have intensified demands for his removal from the state cabinet. Opposition Leader R. Ashoka and JD(S) MLA H. D. Revanna have called for a united agitation, alleging that between Rs 184 crore and Rs 187 crore were siphoned from the corporation. These protests have caused disruptions and stalled proceedings in both the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council during the monsoon session.
Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar has defended Nagendra, characterizing the opposition's actions as “political drama” and stating the minister has no direct involvement in the scam. He further noted that a significant portion of the disputed funds has already been recovered. Nagendra has denied all allegations, claiming he is being targeted due to his political affiliation and Dalit identity, while noting that the courts have not convicted him of any offense.
