Kosovo-Albania border disruptions
Overview
On 4 July 2026 Kosovo ordered all border checkpoints with Albania to be blocked to prevent diaspora demonstrators from reaching Tirana, creating queues up to 3.5 km on the Albanian side. By 21 July 2026 heavy rain triggered a landslide on the Preshev–Gjilan road near Depcë, restricting traffic to a single vehicle at a time and extending queues at the Dheu i Bardhë crossing to about 1.2 km with 90‑minute inbound waits; shorter delays were reported at Hani i Elezit and Muçibabë.
In early August, Prime Minister Albin Kurti urged the Kosovo diaspora to return, describing them as a “small embassy” and highlighting reforms in governance, anti‑corruption, agriculture and defence. The Morinë crossing saw a surge of more than 50 000 vehicles in the first two days of August, prompting authorities to speed up procedures for foreign‑registered cars, many belonging to returning Kosovars. Opposition figures criticised the long border waits, while an Albanian‑diaspora teachers’ seminar in Brezovicë underscored ongoing cultural cooperation.
Authorities continue to advise travelers to check crossing status and consider alternative routes as both political and natural‑disaster factors affect the Kosovo‑Albania border flow.
