Law enforcement operations in Castel Volturno
Overview
Authorities in the Castel Volturno area continue operations to combat illegal occupation, environmental crimes, and organized crime.
In early October, officials scheduled the demolition of five illegal buildings on the coastline built on maritime state land. This follows a two-year crackdown by the Prosecutor’s Office of Santa Maria Capua Vetere and the Court of Appeal of Naples, which resulted in the seizure of approximately 180 structures, including homes, tourist villages, and beach clubs allegedly managed by individuals linked to organized crime.
Recent enforcement has focused heavily on environmental crimes and illegal vehicle dismantling. In mid-October, police in Caserta seized a rural site along via Occidentale used as an illegal landfill and a dismantling hub. Authorities discovered stolen car carcasses hidden under a bridge, which had been stripped for the illegal spare parts market. The Italian Army assisted in removing these materials to facilitate site remediation.
Further investigations led to the seizure of a 6,500-square-meter area and a 1,000-square-meter industrial warehouse in Castel Volturno. These sites contained hazardous materials, including asbestos, paint drums, asphalt scraps, and demolition waste. An entrepreneur from Ischia has been reported to the Public Prosecutor, and environmental agencies are currently analyzing the ecological and health risks associated with the site.
