Legal proceedings and bond increase for Barry Morphew

Overview

Barry Morphew, a Colorado man accused of the first-degree murder of his wife, Suzanne Morphew, was arrested and jailed following an alleged hit-and-run incident in Denver on August 26.

Prosecutors allege that Morphew drove aggressively, striking two vehicles before fleeing the scene. During the incident, a witness reported that Morphew refused to provide identification, claimed to have no insurance, and offered a driver $300 for damages. After the driver rejected the money and contacted police, Morphew allegedly fled, nearly striking another person.

The arrest follows a violation of Morphew’s $3 million bond conditions, which restricted his travel to work, medical appointments, or legal matters. GPS data indicated he traveled to Denver International Airport, an action the district attorney’s office described as an “extreme flight risk.”

Morphew has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges related to the 2020 death of Suzanne Morphew, whose remains were discovered in 2023. Prosecutors have previously noted the presence of wildlife tranquilizer in her bone marrow, a substance Morphew was allegedly authorized to use.

Following his arrest by Boulder County Sheriff's deputies on September 3, a judge increased Morphew’s bond from $3 million to $10 million cash only. The judge cited Morphew’s “capacity to commit new offenses while on bond” and a lack of “respect for the court” as reasons for the increase. In addition to the murder case, Morphew faces new charges including careless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, failing to report an accident, driving without a license, and failing to display proof of insurance.
