León festival feminist protest over Christian Nodal

Overview

In late July 2026 the Festival Internacional del Globo (FIG) in León, Guanajuato announced that regional Mexican singer Christian Nodal would headline the event alongside the duo Xavi, creating the festival’s first double regional‑Mexicano bill.

Feminist collectives, including the Red Feminista de León and the Ley Sabina Guanajuato group, issued public statements rejecting Nodal’s participation. They argued that his presence sends a contradictory message in a region plagued by femicide, family violence and other forms of aggression against women, and called for gender‑perspective and human‑rights criteria in publicly funded cultural programs. Nodal had not responded to the petitions.

On 30 July the same groups reiterated their appeal, urging the festival organizers and the state government to reconsider the booking, emphasizing the need for social responsibility in artist selection. By 3 August the campaign had escalated, with activists demanding the concert’s cancellation. Festival president Abraham Rocha Moreno defended keeping Nodal on the bill, noting the artist has no record of alimony debt or judicial accusations. The festival board and municipal authorities have not issued an official response as the concert date of 15 November approaches.
