LGBTQ+ rights and social openness in Hungary

Following the April election of pro-European leader Peter Magyar, which ended sixteen years of Viktor Orban’s rule, Hungary has seen a shift toward a more tolerant environment for cultural and identity-based events.

In August, the Sziget Festival in Budapest reported a period of renewed openness. Organizers noted that officials have engaged on practical matters without the “headwinds” experienced under the previous administration. The festival continues to emphasize diversity and LGBTQ+ rights through venues like the Magic Mirror.

In September, the sixth Pécs Pride march served as the closing event of the ‘Freedom of My Identity’ human rights festival, organized by the Diverse Youth Network. Under the slogan ‘Freedom cannot be banned!’, between 700 and over 1,000 participants marched a five-kilometer route from the Uránváros district to Kossuth Square to advocate for self-identity, freedom of assembly, and acceptance. The event included a minute of silence for victims of homophobia and transphobia.

Géza Buzás-Hábel, founder and director of the Diverse Youth Network, addressed the crowd, noting that while some restrictive laws from previous administrations remain in effect, there is hope the current leadership will resolve the legal status of LGBTQ+ individuals. While the march was a symbol of visibility, a group identified as HVIM – Magyar Ellenállás claimed to have conducted a protest during the gathering.
