Liechtenstein diplomatic and economic engagements
Overview
Liechtenstein Prime Minister Brigitte Haas is conducting a series of diplomatic engagements focused on economic and technological cooperation. Following the conclusion of Free Trade Agreement negotiations between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) in July 2026, Prime Minister Haas scheduled an official visit to Vietnam to strengthen bilateral ties.
In addition to the mission to Vietnam, Haas participated in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) annual meetings in Bangkok. During the IMF summit, she engaged with international partners regarding global economic stability, financial risks, and the strengthening of free trade and double taxation agreements.
From October 17 to 19, 2026, Prime Minister Haas conducted an official visit to Vietnam, marking the first visit by a high-ranking Liechtenstein official since diplomatic relations were established in 2008. During the mission, Haas met with Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung, President To Lam, and National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man.
A significant outcome of these meetings was the signing of a tax agreement to avoid double taxation between Vietnam and Liechtenstein. These new agreements, alongside the Vietnam-EFTA Free Trade Agreement, are expected to reduce trade barriers, lower tariffs, and encourage investment flows.
Discussions also focused on deepening cooperation in investment, science, technology, and innovation. Vietnam highlighted its 2045 development goals, specifically regarding digital transformation and the private sector, while Liechtenstein’s expertise in finance and high-tech manufacturing was identified as a potential area for partnership. Prime Minister Le Minh Hung expressed specific interest in Liechtenstein’s expertise in managing investment funds, green finance, and international asset management to support Vietnam’s strategic development goals for 2030 and 2045. Vietnam also expressed a commitment to improving institutions to create a favorable legal environment for Liechtenstein investors.
