Lisbon international travel destination rankings

Lisbon has received high rankings in international travel indices regarding its appeal to various visitor segments.

In August 2026, the Holafly Global Team-Building Index identified Lisbon as the premier global destination for corporate retreats, citing competitive costs, flight connectivity, and outdoor activity infrastructure. By September 2026, the city was named the world’s happiest travel destination by the BookRetreats Holiday Happiness Index. The study evaluated 47 destinations based on wellness factors including sunlight exposure, sleep quality, healthy eating, contact with nature, and physical exercise. Lisbon secured the top position due to its 2,828 annual hours of sunshine, 49 square meters of green space per inhabitant, and a high proportion of healthy restaurants, which ranked second among the analyzed destinations. The city’s walkability and proximity to coastal beaches were also cited as key contributors. Helsinki, Orlando, Athens, and Edinburgh followed in the top five rankings.

António Valle, Director-General of the Lisbon Tourism Association, stated that the result highlights the city’s identity, noting that its “quality, authenticity, gastronomy, climate, and proximity to nature create an experience highly valued by visitors.”

As Portugal’s tourism sector grows, discussions have emerged regarding social sustainability and economic shifts. While the country attracts significant international capital—with commercial real estate investment reaching 1,410 million euros in the first half of 2026—concerns persist regarding the supply of high-quality office and logistics assets. Furthermore, the real estate market remains a subject of debate; a UBS study placed Lisbon in a high-risk category for a real estate bubble, though the Portuguese Association of Real Estate Developers and Investors (APPII) attributes high prices to a lack of construction and supply. Experts suggest the primary challenge is shifting from increasing visitor numbers to maintaining the quality of life for local residents and preserving community identity, housing, and local commerce.
