Lithuania fuel price trends and tax policy stance

In late July 2026, Lithuania’s energy agency recorded a modest rise in diesel to €1.97/L and a 0.4% drop in gasoline to €1.77/L. By early August, diesel reached €2.01/L and gasoline fell to €1.76/L, while LPG continued to rise and Brent crude fell to approximately $79/bbl. On 5 August, Finance Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius clarified the government's fiscal stance, stating there was currently no basis for new fuel price measures. He noted that the government would only consider reducing the diesel excise tax if retail prices rose above a €2.20/L threshold. Officials, including Energy Minister Lukas Savickas, maintained that existing temporary tax-relief measures—such as the six-cent diesel excise reduction implemented due to Middle-East shipping disruptions—remained sufficient. Industry representatives, including Vidas Šukys of the Lithuanian Fuel Union, called for a policy review if prices remained above regional levels. By 20 August, data from the Lithuanian Energy Agency indicated a downward trend in fuel costs. The average price for diesel decreased by 0.53% to €2.05/L, with station prices ranging from €1.95 to €2.16. Gasoline prices fell by 0.69% to an average of €1.78/L, while LPG prices saw a 0.52% decrease to an average of €0.76/L. However, by 4 September, fuel prices in Lithuania reversed this trend. Average diesel prices rose by 0.92% to €2.11/L, with some stations reaching €2.29/L. Gasoline prices increased by 1.44% to an average of €1.86/L, and LPG prices also rose by 1.44% to an average of €0.79/L. During this period, Brent crude oil was priced at $95.52 per barrel. In Vilnius, gasoline reached €1.839 per liter, a 4.5% weekly increase, while diesel rose to €2.059 per liter. By 7 September, the Lithuanian Energy Agency reported continued upward movement for diesel and gasoline. Average diesel prices rose by 0.19% to €2.11/L, with retail prices between €1.99 and €2.29.
