Lithuanian urban design and architectural heritage

Discussions regarding Lithuanian urban design and architecture have focused on both social connectivity and cultural heritage. Initial reports highlighted how rapid urbanization and high housing density have contributed to resident loneliness due to a lack of “third places” for social interaction. In response, projects like Vilnius’s “Kvepia mėtom” aim to foster community by moving parking underground to create green, child-friendly courtyards.

Subsequent developments emphasize the preservation and exploration of architectural identity through specific events and research. In Alytus, the ‘Buildings Speak. Alytus’ weekend is set to examine the city’s evolution from a resort to an industrial center. Meanwhile, in Palanga, architectural experts and students are convening to discuss restoration, supported by new research into the history of a modernist pavilion designed by Albinas Čepas.

Recent initiatives continue this exploration of urban identity through professional conferences and local programming. The STRUCTUM and Lithuanian Architects' Union conference, ‘Architecture of Tomorrow: Icons, Cities, and Visions’, will feature experts such as Audrius Ambrasas and Tomas Grunskis to debate whether city identity is shaped by world-renowned architects or by local builders and spontaneous design decisions. Additionally, Panevėžys will host the ‘City Change Pavilion,’ a series of discussions curated by Povilas Marozas. This program will examine the transformation of urban and cultural spaces, focusing on industrial heritage, ecology, and the intersection of art and public space to reflect on the city’s recent changes and future direction.
