LMDh hypercar prototype development and testing
Overview
Automotive manufacturers are conducting extensive testing of new LMDh hybrid prototypes for upcoming endurance racing competitions.
Ford has successfully completed its first on-track test sessions for its Hypercar LMDh prototype. The program included an initial low-speed run at the Paul Ricard Circuit’s Driving Center, followed by sessions at Le Castellet Airport and the Paul Ricard Circuit. Developed through a collaboration between Ford Racing and ORECA, the prototype features an in-house 5.4-liter V8 engine. The testing phase involved three full days of running with Ford Racing drivers, including Logan Sargeant, Matt Campbell, Tom Blomqvist, and Mike Rockenfeller.
Dan Sayers, WEC Hypercar program manager at Ford Racing, stated that the successful shakedown and running period met key milestones following extensive preparation, such as simulator training and dyno work in Dearborn. The prototype is being prepared for a competitive debut scheduled for the first quarter of 2027.
Mclaren has completed a 30-hour endurance simulation at the MotorLand Aragón circuit in Spain. Developed with Dallara, the MCL-HY prototype underwent this test to simulate the distance covered during the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This milestone follows previous testing sessions in Italy and France, with additional driving recently conducted at Silverstone.
